Avoid Seasickness On Your Yacht Charter

by Katie Hart

You have booked this amazing yacht outing in the Bahamas, forgetting that you are also prone to seasickness. How do you make sure you can enjoy your yacht tour without spending it bent over the side of the boat? Here are some tips and tricks to make your boating experience more enjoyable.

Bring Medicine with You!

There are all sorts of suggestions to keep from getting sick while on the boat, and many of them are successful. However, if you know that you get seasick, medicine to ward off sickness is a must! But what type of medicine should you bring?

  • Over-the-counter antihistamines – many antihistamines are also effective at counteracting the effects of seasickness.  The best ones contain dimenhydrinate, cyclizine, diphenhydramine, promethazine, or meclizine. The only downside is that many of these same antihistamines cause drowsiness, so you may be combating the pull of sleep while on the ship.
  • Prescription, anti-nausea medicine – if you have tried antihistamines with little success or are worried about drowsiness, you can consult your doctor for a prescription medicine. These work by addressing motion sickness and may contain scopolamine, promethazine, metoclopromide, or benzodiazepines.

As with any medicine, don't wait to try it on the boat since some can cause side effects that could be worse than the seasickness.

Use Acupressure

There are wrist bands available that are used to stimulate pressure points on the body that help to reduce nausea and dizziness. These wristbands can often be purchased at your local pharmacy. If not, you can always order the wristbands online.

Again, make sure to try out the wristbands prior to your trip since they don't work on all people. If you get motion sickness from riding in a car, for example, you could test the effectiveness of the bands during a long car ride.

Eat Responsibly so You Don't See Your Food Later

There are many foods that can increase the risk of experiencing seasickness or increase the sickness you feel. These include:

  • Caffeinated drinks
  • Wine, beer, or other alcoholic drinks
  • Foods with a high fat content, such as fatty meats or pizza
  • Heavily spiced foods

If you are hungry, eat low-fat foods with a high protein content, such as lean fish, chicken breasts or even cottage cheese. Also, drink lots of water.

Being prepared prior to stepping on your yacht with the proper food, medicine, and preventative techniques can make your yacht charters Bahamas trip one to remember for the fun you had, not for how sick you felt!
