Get Ready For Your First Balloon Trip

Going on a ride in a hot air balloon is a lot of fun, and it doesn't require much in the way of preparation. However, what it does require really is required—without taking a few steps, you'll end up not experiencing as much fun as you could. These steps are easy to take; just plan your outfit a few days beforehand and get to the balloon ride site early.

Choose Comfortable Clothing and Low-Heeled Boots or Shoes

You're going up in the air, in a basket that's possibly rather crowded, and chances are you'll be landing in a field. This is not the time to wear your best dress, in other words. Choose a comfortable shirt and pants that don't restrict your movement and that don't have a lot of flying features like fringe, cords, handkerchief hems, and so on.

Your shoes should be low-heeled, and if there are even tiny heels, they should be wide and very, very short—no pointy kitten heels for women, for example. Boots are excellent; if you don't have tall boots, be sure to wear very long socks that you can pull up over the bottoms of your pant legs. These will protect your legs from rough terrain and plant life.

Secure Loose Items

Anything loose needs to be secured. If you wear glasses and need them to see on the trip, get sport cords to hold them on your face. Hats should have chin cords or straps, and wallets need to be securely tucked away and not left loose in large open coat pockets. If you have to bring medication with you, such as an inhaler or epi-pen, use a secure bag like a fanny pack or small cross-body bag.

Tie Your Hair Back and Use the Bathroom

Just before you go, tie long hair back (men, too), and use the bathroom! Seriously, the balloon isn't going to set down prematurely just for you to make a pit stop. If the launch site isn't near a bathroom, stop somewhere on the way to the site and use the restroom there or use yours at home before you leave.

As for that hair, it can get windy up in the air, and you don't want to spend half your time in the basket brushing hair out of your eyes, or worse, your traveling companions' eyes. (You think your hair only blows into your face?)
